Telkomsel, Ericsson expand 'Hyper 5G' coverage with AI-powered network in Batam

Ericsson reinforces its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s digital transformation by providing advanced network solutions that underpin Telkomsel’s expansive ‘Hyper 5G’ rollout in Batam.

As Telkomsel’s long-term technology partner – dating back to the first base station in Batam in 1995 – Ericsson continues to play a strategic role in shaping the nation’s connectivity infrastructure.

The expansion of Hyper 5G in Batam marks a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between Ericsson and Telkomsel. It reflects their shared commitment to ongoing transformation and delivery of faster, more stable, and intelligent connectivity. Powered by Ericsson’s cutting-edge technology, Telkomsel’s Hyper 5G brings several key benefits that are set to redefine how people and industries connect, collaborate, and experience digital services.

1. Ultra-fast & Stable 5G Connectivity

In Batam, 5G device penetration has reached 23% of Telkomsel’s total subscriber base, with average data consumption of 24 GB per user per month. Telkomsel’s Hyper 5G network delivers outstanding performance – offering download speeds of over 610 Mbps (four times faster than 4G), upload speeds exceeding 100 Mbps, and latency as low as 14 milliseconds. These capabilities make it ideal for applications that require high speed, low latency, and reliable connectivity—from ultra-HD video streaming and seamless video calls to real-time gaming and AI-powered enterprise solutions.

2. Seamless Network Coverage

Ericsson plays a vital role in developing and optimizing Telkomsel’s 5G network in Batam, which is now supported by 112 5G base stations strategically deployed in key areas such as Harbour Bay, Nagoya, Batam Center, Engku Putri, and Hang Nadim Airport. This extensive and reliable network coverage ensures a seamless digital experience for users across the city—whether in business districts, shopping malls, residential areas, or on the move—enhancing both communication and operational efficiency throughout the region.

3. Network Optimization with AI & Autonomous Network

Through the end-to-end integration of Artificial Intelligence within the Autonomous Network framework, Telkomsel transforms its network management by automating key operations. The system intelligently detects and responds to disruptions in real time, while dynamically optimizing network performance based on users’ conditions and demands. This leads to a smoother and more reliable customer experience, improved operational efficiency, and a lower risk of service interruptions – including in Batam’s 5G areas with Ericsson.

4. Increased Digital Access & Inclusion

This wide and stable network coverage facilitates access to essential digital services—ranging from education and public services to entertainment—while advancing digital inclusion at both individual and community levels.

With a wider, faster, and smarter Hyper 5G network, Telkomsel and Ericsson are reinforcing the foundation of Indonesia’s digital transformation. According to the Ericsson ConsumerLab study, 50% of 5G users in Indonesia are willing to pay a premium for services with guaranteed performance, while 32% actively seek superior connectivity for critical applications. These insights highlight the vital role of high-quality 5G networks—like those delivered by Telkomsel and Ericsson in Batam—towards advancing Indonesia’s digital progress.

In addition, this year Telkomsel and Ericsson are also deploying Far Edge Core technology and long-haul MINI-LINK microwave solutions (spanning over 180 km) in Nias Islands, to ensure high-quality, accessible network coverage even in Indonesia’s most remote island regions.

Indra Mardiatna, Chief Technology Officer at Telkomsel

Since the ignition of Indonesia’s very first cellular BTS in Batam 30 years ago, we have always been positioning this city as the barometer of Telkomsel’s network-readiness. Today, following the massive expansion of our 5G network—now seamlessly contiguous across this area—we are determined to ensure that everyone, every household, and every business can benefit from Telkomsel 5G, strategically accelerating economic growth and digital transformation. Moving forward, we will continue extending our 5G coverage to Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Palembang, and other key cities and regencies throughout Sumatra.

Daniel Ode, Acting Head of Ericsson Indonesia

At Ericsson, we take pride in our strategic partnership with Telkomsel towards accelerating Indonesia’s digital transformation, especially as we celebrate Telkomsel’s 30-year journey of advancing the nation. From the first base station in Bukit Dangas in 1995 to the rollout of Hyper 5G in Batam, we have consistently supported Telkomsel as Indonesia’s leading 5G operator. With cutting-edge technologies, we’re enabling faster, more reliable connectivity – unlocking new opportunities for both society and industry.
