Passengers on the East Coast Main Line are set to benefit from a major upgrade in onboard internet, with new satellite-powered Wi-Fi due to be rolled out by rail operator Lumo.
Lumo, a 100 per cent electric train operator running services between London King's Cross and Glasgow, has announced plans to introduce next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi technology on its East Coast Main Line services this autumn.
Starlink provides high-speed, low-latency satellite internet. It uses a network of low Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed internet with low latency.
Lumo will roll out Starlink-powered Wi-Fi on East Coast Main Line services this autumn, offering passengers faster and more reliable internet on routes between London King's Cross and Glasgow.
Described as "revolutionary" by the operator, the new service is designed to provide reliable connectivity in both remote rural areas and dense urban environments, overcoming limitations faced by current trackside and mobile-based systems.
Paul Jackson, Lumo's head of customer and stakeholder engagement, said: "Providing a high-quality, reliable Wi-Fi experience is vital for our customers, whether they're travelling for business or leisure.
"We know people want to stay connected and work effectively while onboard. "The introduction of Starlink technology on our East Coast Main Line services marks a significant step forward in connectivity.
"Working with Hitachi and Icomera, we're committed to delivering a modern, seamless experience that helps customers get the most out of their journey with Lumo."
Lumo is working in partnership with train manufacturer Hitachi, connectivity provider Icomera, and rolling stock lease company Beacon Rail to install the advanced satellite-enabled Wi-Fi.
The improved internet connection is part of Lumo's broader commitment to enhancing the onboard experience for both business and leisure travellers.
Reliable Wi-Fi has become a key expectation for train passengers, but traditional systems often struggle with coverage gaps or infrastructure limitations—issues that have been particularly challenging on long-distance intercity routes.
By adopting Starlink technology, Lumo aims to provide a more consistent, high-quality connection across the full route, allowing passengers to work, stream entertainment, or stay in touch with friends and family while travelling.
The operator has already introduced 5G-enabled Wi-Fi on its West Coast services between London Euston and Stirling, one of few offerings of its kind in the UK rail industry.
The addition of Starlink on East Coast services further cements Lumo's position as a leader in rail technology.
Beyond connectivity improvements, Lumo has also gained industry recognition for other tech innovations.
The company was recently shortlisted at the Leadership in Passenger Transport Awards for a digital campaign that displayed live Lumo train information and ticket prices on screens at petrol stations, encouraging drivers to consider more sustainable travel options.
