Google Cloud, DigitalRoute team up to tackle telco data challenges for autonomous networks

In a significant push toward Level 4 and Level 5 Autonomous Network Operations (ANO), Google Cloud has announced a strategic partnership with DigitalRoute to address the telecom industry's persistent "data swamp" problem.

As networks evolve with 5G and beyond, operators are inundated with raw, disparate data that hinders AI-driven self-healing and optimization. This collaboration aims to transform chaotic network inputs into high-quality, AI-ready fuel through reusable data pipelines.

The core issue, as highlighted in Google Cloud's Data Readiness framework, stems from format disparities across vendors like Ericsson, Nokia, and Huawei. Data arrives in varied forms—ASN.1, XML, CSV, or binary—compounded by massive volumes of records like CDRs and UDRs generated daily. Schema changes from upgrades and fragmented customer sessions further complicate correlation, resulting in unusable "lakes" of data that undermine AI models.

Enter the solution: DigitalRoute's UsageCloud, deployed on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), standardizes ingestion at the edge and core. It decodes proprietary formats, normalizes data into a unified model, filters noise, and aggregates events to cut costs and latency. Processed data then feeds into Google BigQuery for historical analytics and Cloud Spanner for real-time digital twins, enabling seamless AI integration.

This architecture powers key use cases, such as anomaly detection in network performance, rapid root cause analysis via Spanner graphs, and predictive maintenance using Vertex AI-trained models. "Data readiness is the bedrock of true autonomy," notes the partnership's outline, emphasizing how it shifts operators from experimental AI to production-grade operations.

Telcos can now accelerate their ANO journey by scheduling Data Readiness Workshops with Google Cloud or consulting DigitalRoute on format challenges. This alliance positions data as a competitive edge, paving the way for predictive, self-optimizing networks that anticipate failures before they affect subscribers.
