Nokia has announced that it has been selected by altafiber to support the technology provider’s comprehensive, multi-gigabit network expansion in Ohio and across Hawaii, where the company does business as Hawaiian Telcom.
altafiber will deploy Nokia’s cutting-edge 25G PON, IP routing, and advanced optical network solutions to deliver unparalleled speed, scalability, and operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark for broadband services.
Nokia's Lightspan 25G PON solution will enable altafiber to rapidly scale services, introduce differentiated offerings, and maximize its fiber infrastructure investments. The modular PON platform provides seamless support for 10G, 25G, and even 50G PON on the same infrastructure, enabling altafiber to optimize its network and gain the flexibility needed to address specific business cases or needs. This flexible architecture ensures altafiber can immediately deliver symmetrical multi-gigabit broadband speeds today and is equipped to fully support the bandwidth-intensive applications of tomorrow.
Nokia's industry-leading IP routing solutions will form the intelligent backbone of altafiber's upgraded network. The company’s high-capacity 7750 Service Routers (SR) will ensure efficient, resilient, and secure transport of all traffic, supporting the massive influx of multi-gigabit data generated by the new PON and optical infrastructure. The security of this network deployment is further enhanced by the Nokia Deepfield solution, which will ensure network agility and performance to address current and future broadband demands.
Further strengthening the network's foundation, Nokia's integral optical networks solution, including the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI), will be deployed. This will simplify network operations and architectures while providing the highest levels of security.
We are pleased to partner with Nokia as we continue to expand our cutting-edge multi-gig PON fiber network into new Midwest territories and across Hawaii. This partnership ensures we can deliver unparalleled speed and reliability to support the growing needs of our customers.

This project demonstrates Nokia’s leadership and end-to-end capabilities across fixed networks, IP routing, optical transport, and security solutions. With this deployment, altafiber is redefining customer experience, driving operational efficiency, and paving the way for the gigabit broadband era—a triple win. We are incredibly proud to be altafiber’s infrastructure provider and thank them for their continued confidence in Nokia.
David Heard, President of Network Infrastructure, Nokia
This comprehensive network overhaul positions altafiber to deliver the fastest, symmetrical multi-gigabit broadband offerings to both business and residential customers. Notably, this initiative will support Hawaiian Telcom’s commitment to make Hawaii the first fully-fiber enabled state in the U.S. by the end of 2026, setting a new standard for connectivity.
