Hong Kong cellco SmarTone says it is conducting 5G field trials in the 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands, ahead of an expected launch of the technology in 2020.
The operator, which is working with equipment partner Ericsson under a trial permit, conducted simultaneous live tests using 100MHz of frequencies at 3.5GHz and 800MHz in the higher band. SmarTone was recently named as one of the successful bidders in the government’s process to assign spectrum in the 26GHz-28GHz range, along with China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) and HKT.
