"Smart Headband for Driver", developed by Algerian researcher, among ITU's 150 best projects

Developed by Abderahim Bourouis, an Algerian researcher and executive at Algerie Telecom, entitled "Smart Headband For Driver (SHFD)", the project is a "real-time alert system composed of an intelligent headband, designed to accurately detect sleepiness at the wheel, without using video sensors," says the same source.

This new technology "has a system that warns the driver to reduce the car speed when a decline of awareness is detected by the helmet that only exploits the driver’s EEG (electroencephalography)," the statement added.

Referring to the American Foundation National Sleep Foundation, Algeria Telecom indicated that more than 600,000 accidents occur each year in developed countries due to drowsiness.

The American Foundation notes, too, that six hours or less of sleep a night multiply by three the risk of a road accident.

The solution developed by the Algerian researcher is considered as "ideal" for bus and truck drivers to prevent the often deadly accidents, noted Algeria Telecom.

Algeria Telecom reminds that Bourouis also holds the first MED-IT 2012 prize for the best Algerian startup, the second prize of AINnovation Competition (Qatar) and other prestigious national and international awards.

The SHFD project is available on the Forum website "ITU Telecom World 2015" until 31 December 2015, the source concluded.
