Telkom on track with fiber-to-the-home

Telkom says that it is on track to roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) before the end of the year.

It follows an announcement by MTN last week that it launched commercial proof of concept FTTH products at Monaghan Farm on 12 April 2014 – a service which the company says is capable of speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Vodacom, meanwhile, said it is actively rolling out fibre in business parks, while the group is also preparing to do the same in gated communities. However, it said it was still too early to flesh out on the details at this stage.

“Telkom’s Fibre to the Home (FTTH) trial comprising of the Up to 100Mbps Resell DSL and the Fibre Access Line has commenced in selected areas, including Houghton, Celtisdal, Luvenstein and Seapoint,” Telkom told BusinessTech.

The group has invited ISP’s to nominate eligible customers to participate in the FTTH trial. It stated that of those customers who have opted to participate in the trial, a number have already been upgraded to up to 100Mbps Resell DSL trial service.

“Telkom is continuing the upgrading of further customers as part of the trial process,” it said.

The company has also availed an interest register on its website for all customers to record their interest for future fibre services and products.

“The information gleaned from the trial and interest register will inform the pricing and availability of fibre-to-the-Home products and services,” Telkom said.

“Telkom is working towards commercial launch of fibre-to-the-home before the end of 2014,” it said.
