Telefonica and the Madrid City Council (Ayuntamiento de Madrid) have launched a fiber-optic deployment project. The initiative will see the deployment of FTTH connection across 1.3 million households and businesses across the Spanish capital by year-end. Subscribers will be able to access internet connection speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Telefonica plans to invest over EUR 200 million in this project, Cinco Dias reports. Telefonica's fiber-optic network currently covers the districts of Hortaleza, Arganzuela, Moncloa-Aravaca and Fuencarral-El Pardo. By year-end, the network will be extended to cover 80 percent of households and businesses in Madrid, and to 100 percent by 2015.
