The US streaming market now includes 275 subscription video-on-demand services, 141 advertising-supported on-demand services and 60 FAST platforms, according to Parks Associates.
The research firm’s Streaming Video Tracker highlights the range of business models competing for audiences and advertising revenue as providers combine paid subscriptions, advertising and free content.
Its breakdown also identifies 243 premium SVOD services, 55 ad-supported SVOD services, 85 transactional video-on-demand services and eight virtual multichannel video programming distributors, which offer bundles of live television channels over the internet.
Parks cautions that the categories overlap, meaning the figures cannot be added together to produce a total number of individual services. The tracker separately identifies 110 FAST channels, distinct from the 60 platforms carrying free ad-supported streaming television.
“The streaming market is evolving beyond traditional subscription models, with companies testing new combinations of advertising, premium content, and free services,” said Michael Goodman, Director, Entertainment Research at Parks Associates.
“Streaming providers must identify sustainable revenue models that balance advertising, pricing, content investment, and customer retention.”
The findings will inform a discussion on hybrid business models at Parks Associates’ Future of Video conference, taking place on November 17–18 at the Marina del Rey Marriott in California.
Goodman will moderate the session, with contributions from Jill Goldfarb, SVP, Streaming TV at Jukin Media, TMB; Stuart McLean, CEO of FAST Studios; Gene Pao, President and GM, North America at FUEL TV; and Steve Shannon, Founder and CEO of Swerve TV.
