Tunisie Telecom plans to extend mobile network coverage across key Sahara tourist routes in Tunisia’s Kebili governorate beginning in 2027, aiming to improve connectivity, strengthen visitor safety and support tourism operations in remote desert areas.
The state-owned telecommunications operator outlined the initiative during a meeting with tourism industry professionals organised by the Tunisian Federation of Travel and Tourism Agencies (FTAV), according to Ecofin.
The planned expansion will address connectivity gaps along desert excursion routes, where limited mobile coverage can create operational challenges for travel agencies, tour operators and emergency response services.
Improved network availability is expected to enable more reliable communication between tourism operators, guides and travellers, particularly during excursions through sparsely populated areas of southern Tunisia.
For Tunisia's tourism industry, stronger telecommunications infrastructure could also support digital navigation, real-time coordination and faster emergency assistance, contributing to safer and more accessible desert tourism experiences.
The initiative reflects the growing importance of mobile connectivity beyond major urban centres, particularly in regions where tourism and other economic activities depend on reliable communications infrastructure.
While the operator has identified 2027 as the starting point, specific deployment locations, technology specifications and investment commitments have not been detailed in the available announcement.
