Netflix has unveiled a redesigned mobile experience for iPhone Duo, with controls that adapt to the device’s folding positions, alongside plans to introduce themed discovery feeds in 2027.
The update includes a more flexible home screen and playback controls designed to remain accessible when viewing in full-screen, book, tent or tabletop positions. A reflective effect on the controls also responds to the angle of the device’s hinge.
Netflix says a further update will introduce seamless, frame-accurate switching between vertical and horizontal clips. The feature is described as coming soon, with no specific launch date announced.
The changes form part of a wider shift towards designing Netflix’s mobile app around phone usage, rather than replicating its television interface on a smaller screen.
According to Netflix, many members watch predominantly or exclusively on their phones. Earlier this year, the company introduced simpler mobile navigation and Clips, a personalised feed of short extracts from series, films and specials intended to help subscribers choose what to watch or play next.
In 2027, Netflix plans to extend Clips with themed categories and more specialised feeds organised around genres, moods and interests.
“Whether you’re looking for some quick moments to get you through the day, or looking for your next series or film, these feeds give you more ways to discover the breadth and depth of our catalog and find what you want faster,” the company said.
Netflix traces its mobile development back to its arrival on Apple devices in 2010, followed by the introduction of downloads in 2016. It describes downloads as a turning point that encouraged its product teams to explore features specific to phones, including short-form video and more prominent mobile promotional displays.
The latest announcement does not specify when the device-adaptive interface might extend beyond iPhone Duo.
