Malaysian 5G operator U Mobile announced that it has signed an MoU with renewable energy developer HLGY Energy to develop 5G-connected smart solar farm solutions in Malaysia.
Under the MoU, both companies will explore deployment of a private 5G network that would form the digital backbone of the smart solar farm.
The network would support applications including autonomous drone inspections, AI-powered analytics and smart CCTV surveillance, enabling remote monitoring, earlier issue detection and faster response to operational and maintenance needs.
HLGY Energy develops and operates utility-scale solar and integrated energy solutions under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) framework. U Mobile would serve as HLGY Energy’s innovation, automation and communications infrastructure provider under the MoU.
“By combining private 5G connectivity with AI and industrial automation, we aim to help HLGY Energy develop renewable energy assets that are safer, more efficient and increasingly autonomous,” said U Mobile chief business officer How Lih Ren.
“Malaysia’s green energy transition needs renewable energy infrastructure that is reliable, efficient and built for the future,” added Kenneth Yap, chairman and executive director of HLGY Energy. “Integrating AI with solar generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS) operations can optimise when energy is stored and supplied, help reduce electricity costs and extend equipment life.”
