The Nepal Telecommunication Authority has issued a warning to internet service providers, stating that companies charging prices above their approved rates will face legal action.
The regulator took this step following complaints that several companies have been increasing prices and altering service packages without prior official approval.
Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Pradip Poudel issued a notice reminding providers of the provisions under Section 42 of the Telecommunications Act 2053. According to the regulation, service providers must obtain approval from the authority for their tariff rates and are required to publicly disclose these rates for consumer awareness.
The authority noted that some internet companies have failed to publish their approved rates and packages. Furthermore, these providers have been changing existing packages and increasing costs without regulatory consent, causing significant inconvenience to consumers. The regulator emphasized that consumers have the right to choose their preferred packages voluntarily.
To ensure transparency, the authority has directed all service providers to clearly publish full details of their approved internet packages and terms on their websites, mobile applications, and at customer service centers. The regulator warned that any company found violating these legal requirements will be subject to action under existing laws.
