KT announced on the 6th that it operated a real-time video surveillance and emergency response system using 5G standalone (SA)-based network slicing technology at the Seoul International Fireworks Festival, where massive crowds had gathered.
The demonstration took place at the "Seoul International Fireworks Festival 2026" held on the 5th. As the event's official technology sponsor, KT installed 25 wireless CCTV cameras with network slicing applied across the Yeouido and Ichon Hangang Park areas, and distributed 10 emergency communication devices to safety personnel.
Network slicing is a technology that partitions a single physical communications network into multiple virtual networks for different purposes. This allows general visitor data traffic and safety management communications to operate independently. Without building separate dedicated lines, KT was able to monitor crowd density and on-site conditions in real time from the central situation room across key areas of the event venue.
This technology can only be implemented in a 5G SA environment where both the core network and base stations are built exclusively for 5G. Following its verification of voice and data communication stability among event staff at the Gwanghwamun World Cup street cheering event in June, KT expanded the application scope at this festival to include high-capacity real-time video transmission.
Oh Taek-gyun, head of KT's Network Strategy Division under the Network Business Unit, said, "This Seoul International Fireworks Festival served as a case confirming the commercial network operation capabilities of 5G SA network slicing and its potential for public safety applications. We will expand into network services specialized for industrial sites."
Building on these results, KT plans to expand network slicing applications to areas requiring stable communications infrastructure, including large-scale events, industrial sites, and public safety. The company is also reviewing customized service offerings for enterprise and general customers.
