South Korea’s Hanwha Systems has partnered with the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) to develop an AI-enabled tactical communications system combining terrestrial 5G infrastructure with satellite-based connectivity, ChosunBiz reported.
Commercial 5G technology will be adapted for military use, with AI tools used to manage communications across terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, helping military units maintain voice and data links as operational conditions and network availability change.
Hanwha Systems and TTA plan to test interoperability from the early stages of development, with the aim of making the technology compatible with allied communications networks and suitable for export markets, particularly in NATO and European countries.
Integrated Communications for Military Platforms
The partnership also covers the development of a Multi-Orbit Satellite System, an integrated communications package intended for installation on military vehicles and other platforms.
The system will combine a mobile tactical 5G base station with data transmission equipment and satellite terminals.
It will also integrate command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence capabilities on the same platform.
“Advancing military communications is a core capability that will determine victory or defeat on future battlefields,” stated Hanwha Systems.
Expanding AI
The tactical communications project is part of a broader South Korean effort to integrate AI into military operations.
Earlier this month, Seoul commissioned a study examining how AI could strengthen its counterintelligence capabilities against emerging threats, including cyberattacks, disinformation, drone surveillance, and electronic warfare.
The research will consider new operational concepts, intelligence analysis tools, databases, and information-sharing systems.
It will also examine whether AI could support military deception by helping coordinate activities to mislead adversaries while protecting actual operations.
