Amazon launches Prime in South Africa

Amazon has launched Prime in South Africa, adding fast free delivery, Prime Video and shopping benefits to its local ecommerce offer.

The launch means South African customers will be able to access Prime Day for the first time, with the event running from June 23-29.

Prime membership is available for R59 (€3.00) per month or R399 (€20.40) per year, following a 30-day free trial.

Benefits include unlimited free same-day delivery on eligible orders placed before midday in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as unlimited free next-day delivery with no minimum spend.

Prime members will also receive access to Prime Video, including Amazon originals, international series and films, and local content such as Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story.

Amazon Luna benefits are also included, with free monthly PC games and a monthly Twitch channel subscription.

Robert Koen, managing director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon, said the launch was the next milestone in the company’s expansion in South Africa, following the opening of Amazon.co.za two years ago.

Amazon said Prime is now available in South Africa alongside 26 other countries worldwide.
