Internet services across Bangladesh may experience slowdowns or partial disruptions for up to 80 hours from tonight to Monday morning due to maintenance on the country’s second submarine cable.
Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC said in a statement on Wednesday that maintenance work on the SEA-ME-WE-5 (SMW-5) submarine cable, installed in Kuakata, will begin at 10pm tonight and continue until 6am on 13 April.
According to the statement, the SMW-5 consortium will carry out S1.5.1 shunt fault repair maintenance during this period.
The Submarine Cables warned that the work may temporarily disrupt internet services, as circuits routed through the cable to Singapore could be affected. Users may experience slower speeds or partial outages.
During the maintenance, internet traffic will be rerouted through Bangladesh’s other submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE-4, in Cox’s Bazar. Since most of the country’s internet traffic flows through these two government-owned cables, any disruption in one can impact services nationwide.
Earlier, a consortium of private companies had proposed installing a private submarine cable in Bangladesh, but the plan was not approved during the previous interim government.
