According to a statement from the telco on Thursday, the move transitions M-Pesa from its legacy G2 system to a next-gen financial technology platform built for scale, resilience, and innovation.
For customers, that means improved reliability and reduced service interruptions during routine maintenance or system enhancements, with downtime cut from hours to minutes. Vodacom said it also means enhanced security layers to safeguard customer data and transactions.
Meanwhile, the upgrade promises greater transactional capacity, detailed reports, and more transparent service management for M-Pesa agents, merchants, and enterprise partners, as well as faster deployment of new features and services.
A cornerstone of the upgrade is a “30-day HyperCare” period to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform, with Vodacom's technical and customer support teams proactively working to identify and resolve any bugs or issues that may arise.
Vodacom Tanzania CEO Philip Besiimire said the upgrade equips M-Pesa with a future-ready backbone designed to scale sustainably and securely.
"We are strengthening the foundation of M-Pesa to ensure it remains secure, reliable, and ready to support innovation at scale,” Besiimire said in a statement.
News of the platform upgrade comes after Vodacom Tanzania added a tap-to-pay feature to M-Pesa last month via a partnership with Visa and Paymentology.
