The Special Communication Organization (SCO) has reached the final stages of a project to deploy 5G technology in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). This initiative marks the first time 5G services will be available in these areas, ahead of a broader nationwide rollout in mainland Pakistan.
The project involves the installation of seven new 5G BTS towers designed to handle the unique topographical challenges of the region. By enhancing network capacity and providing high-speed internet, the SCO aims to bridge the digital divide and support the growth of e-education, telemedicine, and the local tourism sector.
Phase 1 Rollout Cities
The initial launch will focus on five major urban centers to ensure stable connectivity before expanding into more remote valleys:
- Gilgit (GB)
- Skardu (GB)
- Hunza (GB)
- Muzaffarabad (AJK)
- Mirpur (AJK)
