Saudi Arabia and UNESCO partner to lead global dialogue on sustainable AI

Leaders from government, academia, and industry recently convened in Saudi Arabia to define the future of Sustainable AI, framing it as a necessity for modern infrastructure under the Vision 2030 program. The collaboration between the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) and UNESCO emphasizes a “sustainable-by-design” approach, ensuring that technology development accounts for environmental impact, ethics, and human dignity from its inception.+1

A central theme of the workshop was the distinction between “Greening with AI”—using technology to solve environmental challenges—and “Greening of AI”—minimizing the carbon footprint and energy consumption of the AI models themselves. This dual focus is supported by Saudi Arabia’s maturing regulatory landscape, including the National AI Ethics Principles, which aim to turn policy into operational governance.

Expert contributors, including representatives from the University of Cambridge and the UN Global Compact, stressed that AI should augment human potential rather than replace it. Real-world applications were also showcased: companies like RECYCLEE and Remedium are already using AI to optimize resource recovery and reduce healthcare’s environmental impact, proving that the Kingdom’s digital transformation is becoming a benchmark for responsible, future-ready innovation.
