Egypt is moving to tighten digital safety rules for children, joining a growing global push to regulate harmful online content targeting minors.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly convened senior ministers and regulators at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to advance new safeguards aimed at protecting children and young people from risks linked to social media and online gaming platforms. The discussions follow presidential directives and reflect increasing concern that existing protections are insufficient.
Madbouly noted that Egypt’s parliament is already working on legislation to regulate children’s use of social media and digital games, with the government coordinating closely with lawmakers to finalise the framework. He stressed that Egypt’s approach mirrors international efforts to strengthen online child protection.
Health and Human Development Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar outlined a proposed regulatory model inspired by global best practices. The framework includes age-based content ratings, stronger age verification, enhanced parental controls, and financial penalties for platforms that fail to comply. The objective, he said, is to create a safer digital environment while reinforcing national values and preparing young people for a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
