Telkomsel expands 4G, 5G networks to support internet access equity

Telecommunication company Telkomsel has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening and equalizing national internet access through the continued expansion of its 4G and 5G networks in line with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Application (Komdigi) target to achieve a minimum 97.5 percent nationwide 4G signal coverage ratio by 2026.

Telkomsel Vice President of Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility, Abdullah Fahmi, said the company’s 4G network currently reaches more than 97 percent of Indonesia’s population.

“To date, Telkomsel has carried out massive 4G network expansion across Indonesia. Based on previously published data, Telkomsel’s 4G network now covers more than 97 percent of the population, in line with national achievements,” Fahmi said as quoted in a statement by detikINET on Friday, January 23, 2026.

He cited that Telkomsel operates hundreds of thousands of base transceiver stations (BTS) nationwide, the majority of which are 4G BTS deployed across urban areas as well as frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions.

Through the end of 2026, Telkomsel will continue to prioritize strengthening its 4G network, particularly in residential areas, economic activity centers, and high-traffic mobility corridors.

“Telkomsel will continue enhancing the quality and capacity of its 4G network, including improvements in reliability and access speed to maintain customer experience,” Fahmi said.

The strategy also supports the government’s goal of achieving at least 97.5 percent national 4G coverage, through optimization of existing infrastructure and collaboration with multiple stakeholders.

Gradual 5G expansion

In addition to 4G, Telkomsel is continuing the phased and measured rollout of its 5G network. Currently, Telkomsel’s 5G services operate commercially in more than 80 cities and regencies, supported by over 5,000 5G BTS nationwide.

“The implementation of 5G is being carried out selectively, in line with device ecosystem readiness, market demand, and spectrum availability,” Fahmi said.

By the end of 2026, Telkomsel aims to expand contiguous 5G coverage in major cities, while strengthening networks in industrial zones, business districts, and key economic growth areas.

The company is also promoting the use of 5G across enterprise and industrial segments, including manufacturing, mining, logistics, smart cities, transportation, and tourism.

“Beyond network expansion, we actively encourage cross-sector collaboration to ensure that 5G delivers tangible benefits for both retail and corporate customers,” Fahmi said.
