Magyar Telekom begins migration of 2G customers to Yettel's networks

The move means that Magyar Telekom customers can still use 2G service.

Magyar notes that the aim of the agreement is to "rationalize the use of available frequencies" so that the carriers can expand their respective 4G/5G capacity.

The transition is set to be completed by April 1, 2026. Magyar Telekom stated that its subscribers will continue to be Telekom subscribers, while contracts and the use of services will not be affected by the transition.

“The cooperation ensures the continuity of the service, and the redirection of traffic also allows us to operate the network more economically and efficiently. The freed frequencies can be used to develop a 4G/5G network that offers greater efficiency and a better user experience," said Péter Nagy, deputy CTO of Magyar Telekom.

Nagy added that the telco aims to deploy its 5G coverage to 99 percent of Hungary's population this year.

"The 2G mobile access agreement is therefore a logical step in our network modernization process and a welcome example of cooperation," he said.

Magyar Telekom currently serves around 6.6 million mobile customers, 1.6 million fixed broadband customers, plus 1.4 million TV subscribers.
