Algeria is set to significantly enhance its international connectivity as the foundation stone for a new submarine cable linking the country to global communications networks will be laid in the coming days, according to Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki. Speaking on Algerian Radio, the minister said the project will strengthen national internet infrastructure, which currently supports a capacity of 10.2 terabits per second, and further improve internet speeds across the country.
Zerrouki noted that Algeria is now in a strong position in terms of internet performance due to its growing data capacity. He added that the number of fibre optic subscribers has reached 2.9 million and is expected to surpass 3 million in the coming weeks. The government is targeting nationwide fibre optic coverage by 2027 as part of its broader digital development agenda.
The minister also confirmed that Algeria’s fibre optic network has expanded to reach the borders with Mauritania and Niger, strengthening regional connectivity. In addition, he recalled the adoption of the Algiers Declaration on Fair, Safe, and Responsible Digital Platforms in Africa earlier this month, which includes an action plan aimed at protecting African data and reinforcing digital sovereignty across the continent.
