Digital Realty joins BW Digital’s NCC subsea cable project

Digital Realty says it will support BW Digital’s rollout of the Nongsa Changi Cable System (NCC) subsea cable linking Singapore and Indonesia, which will now also connect directly to Digital Realty’s SIN12 data centre in Batam.

Under the deal announced Tuesday, BW Digital will integrate its NCC cable landing facilities with Digital Realty’s global data centre platform. Digital Realty said this will enable high-performance subsea connectivity, storage and interconnection within SIN12, which is also designed to support AI and machine learning workloads via its PlatformDIGITAL global data center platform.

Digital Realty said the partnership will also enable BW Digital’s customers to expand their connectivity ecosystems and scale AI workloads by establishing interconnections directly within SIN12, while reaping cost efficiencies via cross connects to other providers already hosted in the facility.

“By integrating BW Digital’s Nongsa–Changi system into SIN12, we are working to deliver faster and more resilient connectivity to support customers as they scale next-generation workloads,” said Serene Nah, MD and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, in a statement.

Meanwhile, BW Digital’s 144-MW NDP-1 data centre in Batam, which is currently under construction, will support Digital Realty’s customers with access to colocation and cloud connectivity options in the “Singapore-Johor-Riau Growth Triangle” (SIJORI), billed as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital hubs.

BW Digital said NDP-1 is designed to feature direct on-ramps to BW Digital’s subsea cable landing station for low-latency and resilient links to regional markets.

“We are hoping to enable AI workloads, provide reliable, secure connectivity between Singapore and Batam, support for rising demand in cross-border data exchange, and ongoing collaboration with Digital Realty to empower customers with greater interconnection flexibility,” said BW Digital chief business officer for connectivity Virginie Frouin.

First announced in July 2024, the NCC cable is being built by BW Digital and Telkom Indonesia’s international arm operator Telin. The 50-km cable is designed with a minimum of 24 fibre pairs that will provide more than 1.6 Pbps (petabits per second) of new capacity between Changi and Batam. BW Digital said the NCC cable will enable seamless connectivity between data centres with less than 2-ms latency between Singapore and Indonesia.
