One NZ beefs up 5G coverage with customer input

One New Zealand continued to expand 5G coverage across the country by upgrading or deploying 173 sites since the beginning of the year, with customer feedback guiding its investments.

Thaigan Govender, GM of mobile access networks, stated customers play “a crucial role in shaping the upgrade programme” by using One Pin to let it know where they experience issues such as slow speeds or dropped calls. “When lots of people drop a pin in the same place, it becomes a priority area for us.”

The One Pin programme allows customers to drop a pin on a map to report issues or request coverage improvements.

Last month it added nine new sites and upgraded 12 to expand 5G coverage.

All mobile sites now support 4G, as One NZ prepares to shut down its 3G network at end-December.

The operator started 2025 with about 70 per cent of the population covered by 5G service, with more than half its mobile user base on 5G plans. It has not disclosed its base station or tower counts.

One NZ is the second-largest mobile player in New Zealand, with 2.3 million connections at end-September, behind market leader Spark with 2.6 million, data from GSMA Intelligence showed.
