Telstra has announced major upgrades to its mobile base station in Nimbin, aimed at enhancing 4G and preparing for future 5G services. The improvements are set to deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming, and reduced congestion for local customers.
Faster, Smarter Connectivity for Nimbin
The upgrade will significantly boost network capacity, improving the mobile experience for both residents and visitors. Acting Regional General Manager for Northern NSW, Joshua Fulwood, said the works will future-proof the site for advanced 5G rollout.
“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country,” Mr Fulwood said.
“As data use continues to grow, adding extra 4G capacity will deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion. The work will also prepare the site for an even faster 5G upgrade in the future.”
While the project will deliver long-term benefits, Telstra has advised that temporary service disruptions will occur while the upgrade is underway.
Temporary Disruptions and Safety Measures
Mobile services will be unavailable at times during November as technicians complete the work. The site will be switched off for maintenance on the following dates:
11 November: 12 hours
12–14 November: 10 hours each day
17–19 November: 4 hours each day
During these periods, Telstra mobile customers may experience limited coverage. However, landline, NBN, and satellite services will not be affected. Any Triple Zero (000) calls from Telstra mobiles will automatically connect via another network if available. This ensures continued access to emergency services.
Tips to Stay Connected
Telstra recommends customers enable Wi-Fi Calling, a free feature available on most smartphones. It allows calls and texts over a Wi-Fi connection.
Business owners are also encouraged to connect EFTPOS terminals to their NBN or Wi-Fi networks during the upgrade to avoid disruptions to payment services.
Mr Fulwood added that Telstra aims to complete the work as efficiently as possible.
“We’ll only switch off the site when necessary and will have it back online and performing better than ever as quickly as possible.”
These upgrades form part of Telstra’s ongoing investment in regional connectivity. It ensures rural towns like Nimbin remain connected as mobile technology evolves.
