The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has launched pilot trials for its new Central Number Portability System (CNPS), an advanced platform designed to enable customers to switch between mobile and fixed-line service providers seamlessly — while retaining their existing numbers.
According to the TRA, the new integrated central system will make it possible for users to change operators within minutes through an automated, digital process, significantly improving user convenience and competitiveness in the telecom sector.
“The system will simplify the switching process for beneficiaries and enhance the efficiency of telecom operations, ensuring service continuity and quality,” the TRA stated.
The trial phase will focus on testing both the technical infrastructure and procedural workflow to ensure operational readiness before full-scale deployment. During this phase, the TRA and operators will assess performance, address technical challenges, and streamline user experience.
Key Features of the New System
Instant switching: Customers can change their mobile or landline operator in a matter of minutes.
Full automation: The process is completed digitally, reducing paperwork and manual intervention.
Enhanced competition: Simplified switching encourages telecom operators to improve services and pricing.
User-friendly interface: Customers can initiate porting requests online or via SMS.
For example, users wishing to switch providers will be able to submit requests online, receive instant confirmation messages, and — in the case of postpaid plans — pay outstanding dues directly through secure links. Prepaid users can confirm their porting by simply replying with the word “Port.” Within minutes, the transfer will be finalized.
Transition and Future Benefits
In August 2025, the TRA temporarily suspended Oman’s existing number portability service to facilitate the migration to this new centralized system. The move aims to enhance service reliability, support digital transformation, and boost competition among telecom providers.
The TRA emphasized that this transition is essential to “ensure a smooth migration to the upgraded framework that will ultimately deliver better service quality and network performance for consumers.”
Once fully operational, the Central Number Portability System is expected to serve as a cornerstone of Oman’s digital transformation agenda, improving customer satisfaction and ensuring fair competition within the national telecom ecosystem.
