Internet use via mobile connections in Peru is experiencing significant growth in new sectors, including online banking, according to the latest Residential Telecommunications Services Survey (Erestel) from the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL).
The percentage of people who used mobile internet for digital banking transactions increased from 13.8% in 2022 to 43.6% in 2024, a threefold increase in two years.
“Internet use for digital banking is growing, and this includes apps and e-wallets,” said Lennin Quiso, Director of Regulatory Policies and Competition at Osiptel.
Quiso added that this increase reflects greater citizen confidence in digital channels, as well as a growing adoption of mobile technology to facilitate financial transactions and improve accessibility to banking services.
But banking isn't the only sector where the internet is gaining ground. There was also an upswing in the way people communicate. While in 2022, 50.9% of mobile users used apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, or Meet to make calls, in 2024 this figure reached 77.1%, an increase of 26.2 percentage points.
Digital entertainment is also reflecting a transformation in consumer habits. In 2022, 30.2% of users accessed online audiovisual content (such as music and videos) without prior download. Two years later, this practice reached 45.1% of users.
