PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications announced that it has launched a new video calling service powered by Video Over LTE (ViLTE) technology that allows users to make video calls without using a third-party app.
The ViLTE service – available for both its Smart and TNT brands –enables customers to make high-quality video calls in a similar manner as dialing regular voice calls. Smart added that the service also works with Wi-Fi calling.
ViLTE video calls are available to any Smart and TNT subscriber with an unlimited voice-calling package, with calls billed to the caller’s voice subscription. Video call receivers are not billed for the call, and don’t need to be a Smart or TNT subscriber to receive video calls.
That said, because the service is based on VoLTE, subscribers on both ends wilol need VoLTE- and ViLTE-capable handsets to use the service. They will also need to update their Android devices to the latest software version and make sure VoLTE and ViLTE functions are switched on.
Video calls are already popular via OTT apps such as WhatsApp, but Smart says that ViLTE offers an overall better experience, as it’s more battery-efficient and designed to ensure stable connections even in crowded environments. It also allows subscribers to multitask seamlessly, so they can browse, stream, and use other apps while on a call.
Smart FVP Lloyd R. Manaloto said the telco is continuing to expand its 4G and 5G networks across the country to provide a better customer experience for bandwidth-intensive apps like video calls, live streaming and mobile gaming.
“With ViLTE, we are enhancing everyday communication by empowering our customers with a clearer and more immersive way to connect,” he said in a statement.
