Subsea cable operator and managed connectivity service provider Seacom says it has signed an MoU with broadcast and digital services provider Sentech to accelerate the growth of small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa’s telecoms sector.
Under the MoU – which was signed on September 29 and publicly revealed on Friday – Seacom and Sentech will collaborate over the next 12 months to strengthen the SMME ecosystem by providing mentorship, training, funding, and access to shared innovation platforms, which in turn will boost digital inclusion.
The initiative will offer SMMEs hands-on training in technologies such as fibre, cloud, and broadcasting, as well as practical internship exchanges, and access to educational resources aimed at increasing digital literacy, particularly in townships.
SMMEs and local content creators will also have access to affordable hosting solutions, enhanced hybrid content delivery options, and targeted support in digital migration.
Anton Jooste, MD for Digital Services (South Africa) at Seacom, said its extensive fibre infrastructure combined with Sentech’s broader service reach will give SMMEs greater business opportunities in rural and underserved regions, creating more chances for market entry and growth.
“By combining our strengths, this partnership directly addresses SMME challenges and enables broader participation in South Africa’s digital economy, positioning SMMEs at the heart of national growth,” he said in a statement.
