Local artist debuts first augmented reality exhibition at San Antonio Public Library

The San Antonio Public Library showed off a new virtual experience in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month Tuesday, and it's not too late to check it out.

Zenith of Zeigarnik is the library's first augmented reality experience created by designer and artist Miguel Rodriguez, who was born and raised in San Antonio.

"This is far as I know is San Antonio's first augmented reality exhibition by a San Antonio artist," Rodriguez said.

The exhibition unveiled at the Central Library Tuesday evening reimagines drawings from Rodriguez's past and expands into a visual world through 3D modeling and sculpting, moving across four screens.

It's something Rodriguez thinks is especially unique to the Alamo City.

"I think San Antonio sometimes is behind on forms of art," Rodriguez said. "I think pushing the bounds has always been a part of me. My approach is avant-garde, and I think San Antonio deserves to be at the forefronts of media, art, tech. We don't have that so I kind of wanted to present that for other young kids, other young Latino kids that don't get the opportunity to work in these forms."

Rodriguez says the scans on the walls are thousands of photos pieced together to create one visual scan.

"There's a whole concept on how to view art, and this kind of breaks that barrier," Rodriguez said. "This is pretty advanced in terms of the process, and the method is computer engineering involved."

Most of the locations shown are San Antonio-specific, as Rodriguez does his best to preserve Alamo City spaces that mean the most to him.

And for a San Antonio native, having your work be displayed in a place like the local public library means a lot to Rodriguez.

"My mom used to bring me to the library, and it's kind of a full circle moment," Rodriguez said.

The exhibit will be on display until October 15 during the Central Library's normal hours.
