U Mobile officially launched Malaysia’s second 5G network under the Ultra 5G brand, with the next-generation service first available at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and on a bridge in Penang.
In a statement, the operator noted a standalone 5G service was introduced at Berjaya Times Square, a shopping centre and office building, and across Penang Bridge 1, deploying 5G base stations on two towers.
It targets 80 per cent coverage of populated areas by the second half of 2026.
The operator was awarded a controversial contract to deploy a second network by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission in November 2024. It later confirmed Huawei and ZTE as equipment suppliers for the 5G wholesale network.
U Mobile is one of the smallest operators in the country with 9.8 million mobile connections, behind CelcomDigi with 20.3 million and Maxis with 11.5 million at end-June, data from GSMA Intelligence showed.
The research outfit’s figures peg U Mobile’s 5G connections at 4.8 million, CelcomDigi at 9.2 million and Maxis at 5.1 million.
