U Mobile launches 'Ultra5G', touts indoor coverage strategy

Malaysian telco U Mobile has officially launched Ultra5G – its standalone 5G network – in two locations with an initial focus on delivering 5G experiences in indoor environments.

U Mobile – which won the rights to become Malaysia’s second 5G operator in November 2024 – launched the Ultra5G service at its headquarters in Berjaya Times Square (BTS), as well as Penang Bridge 1, which is fully covered by two 5G cell sites.

At its launch event on Monday, U Mobile conducted several demos to showcase Ultra5G’s capabilities, including a 4K livestream from a roller coaster at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, an immersive mixed-reality experience, and 5G network slicing.

U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen said in a statement that the telco plans to focus its initial deployments at strategic locations such as airports, hospitals, convention centres, and other high-impact indoor and outdoor areas nationwide.

“With deployment ahead of schedule, U Mobile is also doubling down on indoor coverage to ensure the widest and deepest 5G experience in Malaysia,” Yuen said.

According to The Edge Malaysia, Yuen told reporters at the launch event that U Mobile plans to deploy 5G in over 170 buildings in the next 12 months and more than 600 buildings in the next four years.

Earlier this year, U Mobile signed separate deals with EdgePoint Infrastructure and OCK Telco Infra (a subsidiary of Malaysian telecoms network solutions provider and regional towerco OCK Group) as preferred 5G in-building infrastructure partners for its 5G network.

U Mobile is targeting 80% 5G coverage of populated areas by the second half of 2026.
