Warner Bros Discovery’s President, Global Streaming and Games, JB Perrette says the company is about to become more aggressive on account sharing.
In a conference call Thursday, Perrette said the company had spent the last several months making sure its datasets can correctly identify legitimate users of its streaming services including HBO Max and Discovery+.
“[We’re] making sure that we test it sufficiently so that when we turn on the more aggressive languaging around what needs to happen, that we were actually, you know, putting the Net in the right place,” he said.
“Starting in September, you’ll actually start to see the messaging which right now has been a fairly soft cancellable messaging start to get more fixed and such that people will have to take action as opposed to right now sort of having it be a voluntary process.”
Perrette said the real benefits will start in the fourth quarter and then kick in during 2026 as the messaging is tightened further.
WBD’s actions follow initial steps being taken by Netflix, Disney and others to reduce the soft piracy of password sharing.
