U Mobile to use MICTH towers for 5G rollout in Malacca

Malaysian telco and second licenced 5G operator U Mobile said that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-backed Melaka ICT Holdings (MICTH) to boost deployment of its 5G network in Malacca.

Under the MoU terms, MICTH will provide U Mobile with access to its tower and site infrastructure in the state of Malacca, as well as comprehensive support to expedite site implementations throughout the state.

U Mobile and MICTH will also leverage their respective expertise to establish an efficient process for 5G site deployment, which they say will enable faster and broader coverage expansion.

U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen said the deal will help the telco achieve its target of 80% nationwide coverage of populated areas by the second half of 2026.

“Through this MoU, 5G connectivity in Malacca will be enhanced for both consumers and enterprises alike,” he said in a statement.

According to news outlet Soya Cincau, Malacca chief minister Ab Rauf bin Yusoh – who attended the MoU signing ceremony – said 4G and 5G currently cover 99.97% and 89.7% of Malacca’s population, respectively, with average speeds surpassing 121 Mbps. The state is targeting 100% population coverage for both networks by 2027.
