KAIST and Saudi Arabia’s King Saud University have initiated a partnership to establish a joint research institute focused on artificial intelligence (AI). The two institutions met at KAIST’s Dogok campus in Seoul to discuss strategies for AI and digital platform development.
The collaboration will include joint development of open-source AI technologies, creation of joint degree programs, expansion of student and research personnel exchanges, and promotion of joint research in basic sciences and STEM fields. KAIST aims to leverage Saudi Arabia’s capital and digital infrastructure alongside Korea’s AI expertise to foster a cycle of investment, technology, and talent.
A key objective is to develop open AI models and pursue industry-applicable projects through the joint AI research institute. The partnership aspires to create a multilateral AI development platform accessible to multiple countries and institutions, providing an alternative model amid the U.S.-China technological rivalry.
Both universities plan to formalize the cooperation with an official memorandum of understanding and advance plans for the joint institute.
