Telkomsel expands 5G in Makassar with 73 new base stations

Indonesian telco Telkomsel says it has expanded its 5G network coverage in Makassar, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, with the installation of 73 new 5G base stations in the city.

In a statement, Telkomsel said the new base stations enable its 5G service to cover “almost all corners of the city”, including shopping centres, residential areas, industrial areas, tourist destinations and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.

Telkomsel first launched 5G in Makassar in June 2021. Since then, said Telkomsel’s network director Indra Mardiatna, 5G penetration in the city has reached 21% of total devices in circulation as of April 2025. Its customers are consuming an average of 15 GB per user per month nationally, while data download speeds have registered as high as 514 Mbps, he said.

“The 5G ecosystem in Makassar has become more mature, so that the expansion of [5G] coverage massively and continuously without interruption is crucial,” Indra said in a statement.

He added that Telkomsel will continue to accelerate 5G expansion to a number of major cities and districts in Papua, Sulawesi and Kalimantan once the 5G ecosystems in those areas are far enough advanced to justify it.

Telkomsel said it has deployed over 2,500 5G base stations in 56 cities/districts throughout Indonesia.
