Disney builds streaming subscribers

Disney’s direct to consumer business added another 2.5 million subscribers on the quarter.

In means the total number of Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions is now higher than 180 million. Disney+ itself ended Q2 with 126 million subscribers, an increase of 1.4 million on Q1, after growth both from domestic and international markets.

Operating income within the division also improved to $336 million.

The company says it is moving towards a “more unified streaming experience” to which an “expansive portfolio of differentiated high-quality content” is key. A version of ESPN’s SportsCenter is now available to subscribers in the United States and there are plans to announce a second exclusive sports show next week.

Disney is concentrating its efforts on markets with the potential for stronger growth; including the UK, Korea, Japan and Mexico.

Streams, which provides a curated playlist continues to perform. Curated topics include live news and children’s programming. Its most popular stream features 767 episodes of The Simpsons.
