Aurora Networks, a business of Vistance Networks, and Ziggo have achieved a European industry milestone with the continent’s first large‑scale deployment of unified DOCSIS 4.0 nodes in an operational broadband network. The rollout, now underway across the Netherlands, positions the country among Europe’s frontrunners in next‑generation cable infrastructure and marks a significant step toward multi‑gigabit broadband services.
The deployment scales to thousands of unified DOCSIS 4.0 nodes within Ziggo’s hybrid fibre‑coax network, enabling faster and more reliable broadband performance for subscribers. It also represents the first major implementation within Liberty Global’s broader DOCSIS 4.0 strategy, with additional deployments planned across the group’s European operating companies.
Ziggo’s chief technology officer, Thomas Helbo, said the operator’s decision to move early and at scale reflects its ambition to deliver the best possible network experience. He described the rollout as a key step toward achieving multi‑gigabit speeds and long‑term reliability improvements, underlining Ziggo’s commitment to investing in advanced access technologies.
Aurora Networks is supplying the full DOCSIS 4.0 solution, tailored to Ziggo’s network architecture and aligned with EU sustainability requirements. Guy Sucharczuk, senior vice president and president of Aurora Networks, said the combination of unified DOCSIS 4.0 nodes, Distributed Access Architecture and virtualized core technology enables operators to accelerate their path to multi‑gigabit services while reducing power consumption, headend complexity and operational costs.
The deployment integrates Aurora Networks’ D2182 optical node platform, a unified DAA module configured for Remote PHY operation, the vCCAP EVO virtualized core and ServAssure NXT Domain Manager. The unified DOCSIS 4.0 module supports both Extended Spectrum DOCSIS and Full Duplex DOCSIS, giving operators flexibility as network requirements evolve. By shifting DOCSIS physical‑layer processing closer to subscribers, the architecture reduces reliance on traditional headend infrastructure and supports a more distributed and scalable network.
For Ziggo, the new platform provides a foundation to evolve its existing HFC network while leveraging current infrastructure. The combination of R‑PHY and virtualized core functions allows the operator to increase capacity and reliability, streamline operations and prepare for future service demands. ServAssure NXT adds automation and simplifies management across both R‑PHY and vCCAP environments.
Aurora Networks says the deployment demonstrates the readiness of its DOCSIS 4.0 ecosystem for commercial use at scale. Together, the companies are setting a blueprint for cable operators seeking to modernize networks, reduce operating costs and prepare for multi‑gigabit broadband services.
