German public broadcaster ZDF has launched more than 15 themed “ZDF Channels” on its streaming portal, giving viewers a new way to browse and watch content in a lean-back format.
The advertising-free channels are designed to combine the familiarity of traditional TV channel surfing with the flexibility of streaming. Launch categories include films, crime, nature documentaries and a dedicated channel for popular TV show “Bares für Rares”.
Within each channel, viewers can move from one programme or contribution to the next without having to actively select individual content. They can also switch between different themed channels at any time.
According to ZDF, the channels are intended to respond to changing viewing habits and make it easier for users to find content within its broad streaming offering.
“The new ‘ZDF Channels’ make discovering our content even easier,” said Tina Kutscher, head of User Products in ZDF’s Audience Directorate. “Whether crime, nature or a favourite programme – users can be inspired and stream a wide range of content around their favourite topic in lean-back mode. This makes our diverse offering even more accessible to many users.”
The content of the individual channels is selected by an algorithm and updated daily, providing viewers with a constantly changing selection of content from the ZDF streaming portal.
The “ZDF Channels” are available under the Live & TV section of the ZDF streaming portal.
