Bangladesh internet subscribers reach nearly 136 million as mobile dominates connectivity

Bangladesh’s internet subscriber base reached 135.94 million at the end of June 2026, after adding 6.27 million users during the first half of the year, according to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

The figures show that internet subscriptions now account for more than three-quarters of the country’s population, with mobile networks continuing to provide the overwhelming majority of connections.

Mobile internet accounts for most subscriptions

Of the total 135.94 million internet subscribers recorded in June, 120.84 million were mobile internet users.

That means mobile connectivity accounted for nearly 89% of all internet subscriptions in the country.

The remaining 15.10 million subscribers were connected through broadband services.

The split highlights the central role of mobile networks in expanding internet access across Bangladesh, particularly in areas where fixed broadband infrastructure is less widely available.

Subscriber base adds 6.27 million users in six months

According to BTRC data, Bangladesh added 6.27 million internet subscribers during the first half of 2026.

The increase points to continued demand for digital connectivity across both mobile and fixed broadband services.

The source does not provide a breakdown of how many of the new users came from mobile versus broadband connections, but the overall market remains heavily weighted towards mobile access.

Mobile remains Bangladesh’s primary digital access channel

The dominance of mobile internet has important implications for how digital services are designed and delivered in Bangladesh.

For many consumers, smartphones are likely to remain the primary gateway to online banking, social media, e-commerce, government platforms, education and entertainment.

That makes mobile network quality, affordability and device access particularly important to the next phase of digital adoption.

Broadband, meanwhile, continues to play a more limited but important role for households and businesses that require higher-capacity or more stable fixed connections.
