Crunchyroll is extending its anime streaming service to connected vehicles through a distribution agreement with Appning by Forvia.
The service will initially become available in selected BMW and Mini vehicles before expanding across the BMW Group and potentially to more than 40 automotive brands using Appning’s application platform.
Markets covered by the agreement include Europe, Asia, Australia, India, Latin America and North America. Availability and functionality will depend on the vehicle, territory and local safety restrictions.
Appning powers BMW’s in-car app store and associated digital services, while TiVo provides the video discovery system through which passengers can browse personalised and curated Crunchyroll programming.
Crunchyroll’s catalogue comprises more than 50,000 episodes and films, representing approximately 25,000 hours of anime content. The company operates in more than 200 countries and territories, with UK subscriptions starting at £5.99.
“Today’s consumers expect their entertainment to be available wherever they are, including in their vehicle,” said Brian McGarvey, senior vice-president of global distribution and business development at Crunchyroll. “Through this collaboration with Appning, we’re glad to provide another way for this passionate, global fan community to enjoy their favourite anime.”
The integration is intended principally for passengers and for viewing when a vehicle is stationary, subject to the display controls and regulations applied by individual manufacturers and markets.
Automotive operating systems are becoming another distribution point for streaming companies as manufacturers add larger displays, app stores and connectivity to their vehicles. Crunchyroll has not given a precise launch date, saying availability will begin soon and broaden during the next year.
