Hanwha Systems, TTA to develop AI-based 5G tactical communications system

Hanwha Systems is developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based 5G tactical communications system with the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA).

Hanwha Systems announced on August 13 that it is pursuing a strategic partnership with TTA to develop an AI-based 5G tactical communications system.

The two sides will develop next-generation military communications network technology that integrates and operates 5G terrestrial networks (TN) and non-terrestrial networks (NTN), including satellite communications, using AI. They will also apply global communications standards so the technology can be deployed internationally as well as in South Korea.

Hanwha Systems will provide military communications technology developed through the Tactical Information and Communication Network (TICN) program. TTA will contribute its expertise in mobile communications standardization and internationally accredited testing and certification. Hanwha Systems identifies TICN as a core tactical communications system supporting network-centric warfare and military command, control, and communications.

The companies plan to incorporate 5G and 6G technologies from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an international mobile communications standards organization, alongside North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) communications standards from the early stages of development. They will also verify interoperability and compatibility between commercial and military communications systems.

Furthermore, the two sides will jointly develop an integrated communications solution called “MOSS” for installation on vehicles and other platforms. MOSS is designed to integrate a mobile tactical 5G base station and transmission equipment, satellite communications terminals, and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) mission equipment into a single platform. Hanwha Systems has described MOSS as a modular integrated command, control, and communications solution for mobile platforms.

Hanwha Systems plans to apply the tactical communications technology incorporating global standards to overseas defense markets, including Europe and NATO member states.
