Google TV Freeplay expands to 10,000 ad-supported films and TV episodes in the US

Google has expanded its Google TV Freeplay service in the United States with more than 10,000 advertising-supported films and television episodes, broadening its free streaming proposition as competition intensifies across the FAST and ad-supported video market.

The expanded on-demand catalogue includes content from studios and distributors such as A24 and Lionsgate, with initial titles including Lady Bird and Seventeen Again.

Google said the library will be refreshed throughout the year, adding a larger on-demand component to a service that has so far been strongly associated with free linear streaming channels.

Freeplay now combines on-demand video with more than 300 channels

The expansion gives Google TV Freeplay a broader mix of free, advertising-supported entertainment.

Its linear channel offering has grown to more than 300 channels spanning news, sport, reality television and factual programming.

Recent additions include World of Love Island, Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo Sports Network and The Martha Stewart Channel.

The service is available through the Freeplay app on supported Google TV devices and does not require a paid subscription.

This combination of linear FAST channels and on-demand programming puts Freeplay closer to the hybrid free streaming model used by a growing number of connected TV platforms.

Google deepens its role in FAST streaming

Google began introducing its own built-in FAST channels in 2023, initially integrating them into a unified programme guide alongside services from Pluto TV, Tubi, Plex and Haystack News.

The company later adopted the Freeplay brand for its internally supplied channels.

The addition of a large on-demand catalogue represents a further step in that strategy, giving Google more control over the user experience and more inventory that can be monetised through advertising.

The service remains limited to the United States for now.

Advertising becomes central to the platform strategy

Freeplay is not only a content product but also part of Google’s broader advertising ecosystem.

Advertising inventory generated through the service feeds into the Google TV advertising network, which can be purchased through Google Ads and Display & Video 360.

That creates a direct link between Google’s connected TV distribution platform and its established digital advertising infrastructure.

For advertisers, the model extends Google’s reach into television viewing environments. For Google, it creates another surface where it can monetise engagement without requiring subscription revenue from viewers.
