Discovery+ has introduced a group of always-on streaming channels in the United States, combining scheduled franchise programming with live feeds from NASA+.
The channels are rolling out across all discovery+ subscription tiers and supported devices, including the service’s app and website.
Eight of the initial services are themed around Warner Bros. Discovery franchises: 90 Day Universe, Beat Bobby Flay, Deadliest Catch, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Evil Lives Here, Ghost Adventures, Gold Rush and House Hunters.
Two further channels are supplied by NASA. The main NASA+ service carries live events, announcements and original programming, while NASA+ Live Earth Views provides a continuous feed from the International Space Station.
NASA programming will be streamed in Dolby Vision on compatible devices. HBO Max will also carry selected NASA events, including the Artemis III mission in 2027.
“We are excited to partner with NASA+ and for the opportunity to deliver their extraordinary programming to our discovery+ and HBO Max subscribers in Dolby Vision, including the next historic Artemis III mission,” said Neal Roberts, distinguished engineer, video platform, at Warner Bros. Discovery.
Discovery+ is describing the thematic services as “play-listed channels” rather than linear networks. Viewers joining one of these channels will begin at the start of the episode currently scheduled and can use playback controls to move backwards or forwards. The NASA services open at the live point in the stream.
The format gives discovery+ a scheduled viewing layer alongside its on-demand catalogue, reducing the need for viewers to select individual episodes. It also provides Warner Bros. Discovery with another way to reuse extensive libraries attached to established unscripted franchises.
Discovery+ previously operated a collection of curated 24-hour channels in the United States before withdrawing the feature in 2023. Live linear channels have remained available in some international versions of the service, including the UK.
NASA+ continues to be available free and without advertising through NASA’s own app and website.
