EE has started engaging consumer customers affected by its planned 2G network switch-off, beginning the transition away from the UK's legacy mobile technology as the operator prepares to move users and devices onto newer network infrastructure.
The customer engagement process is intended to identify subscribers still dependent on 2G connectivity and give them time to migrate to compatible devices and services ahead of the eventual shutdown. The transition forms part of the wider UK telecom industry's move to retire ageing mobile infrastructure and concentrate investment on more advanced 4G and 5G networks.
For EE, the process represents an important operational stage in retiring technology that has remained part of the UK's mobile landscape for decades.
Legacy network retirement requires customer migration
Switching off 2G is more complex than simply deactivating old network equipment.
Operators must identify customers whose phones or connected devices still rely on the technology and ensure they have viable migration paths. Legacy networks can continue supporting older handsets as well as machine-to-machine and Internet of Things applications that may have remained operational for many years.
