Maldives launches digital marketplace for local creators

The Maldives has launched a national digital marketplace designed to help local photographers, filmmakers and other creative professionals sell their work directly to international buyers as the country seeks to expand its digital economy and promote homegrown creative industries.

The new platform, called Creatoll, was developed by the Visit Maldives Corporation as an online marketplace exclusively for Maldivian visual and cultural content.

According to the corporation, creators can build verified profiles, upload photographs and videos, set their own prices and earn income while retaining full ownership of their intellectual property.

Unlike conventional content platforms that often rely on intermediaries, Creatoll allows artists to market and monetize their work directly through a dedicated national platform.

Officials say the system is intended to provide a sustainable source of income for creative professionals while increasing global visibility for Maldivian culture and storytelling.

The marketplace is open to creators working across multiple disciplines, including photography, filmmaking, documentary production and other forms of digital content.

By allowing users to independently manage pricing and distribution, the platform aims to give creators greater control over how their work is commercialized.

Officials also view the initiative as part of the Maldives’ broader effort to diversify its economy beyond tourism by supporting knowledge-based and creative industries.

The platform is expected to help preserve and promote authentic Maldivian culture while making locally produced content more accessible to international audiences.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Heena Waleed said the platform creates new opportunities for young Maldivians to showcase their talent globally while earning income from their creative work.

The Visit Maldives Corporation described Creatoll as more than an online marketplace, saying it is intended to strengthen the country’s creative economy by connecting local artists with buyers around the world and expanding international access to Maldivian visual and cultural content.
