Comboios de Portugal is testing a satellite connectivity solution based on Starlink technology aboard an Alfa Pendular train. The pilot project aims to improve Wi-Fi service in areas where mobile network coverage is weaker.
CP – Comboios de Portugal, Portugal’s national rail operator, is implementing a satellite connectivity pilot project aboard an Alfa Pendular train.
The solution uses Starlink technology and aims to improve the quality of onboard internet service, particularly on sections of the route where mobile network coverage is limited or where the signal weakens.
The project will allow for the evaluation of the technology’s performance under real-world commercial operating conditions.
Faster and More Stable Internet Onboard
CP aims to offer passengers a faster, more stable, and low-latency internet connection for a better digital experience during their journey.
Pedro Moreira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CP, stated that the project is part of the company’s service modernization efforts.
“This pilot project represents yet another decisive step in the modernization of our services, reinforcing CP’s commitment to offering customers a more comfortable, connected travel experience in line with current technological standards,” said Pedro Moreira.
The solution being tested uses satellite communication antennas, which complement the current onboard communications system based on national mobile networks.
This approach aims to strengthen internet connectivity in areas where mobile coverage is weaker and to ensure better continuity of communications throughout the journey.
Initial results are positive
The initial results obtained by CP are positive. In the initial tests, satellite technology accounted for approximately 19% of the total traffic recorded on board.
According to the Portuguese operator, the satellite connection played a particularly important role on route segments where the terrestrial mobile network performs less effectively.
During the testing period, CP will collect technical and operational metrics to assess the solution’s stability, coverage level, technical performance, and the quality of service as perceived by passengers.
Depending on the results, the company will evaluate the possibility of implementing the technology on a larger scale in its services.
