Qatar launches National Digital Safety Index to strengthen online protection and digital wellbeing

Qatar has launched a National Digital Safety Index, a new initiative designed to measure and enhance digital safety across the country while promoting responsible technology use, cybersecurity awareness, and online wellbeing.

The index aims to provide a comprehensive framework for assessing digital safety indicators across different segments of society, helping policymakers, institutions, and stakeholders better understand emerging risks and develop targeted strategies to improve online protection.

The initiative reflects Qatar’s growing focus on creating a secure and trusted digital environment as internet usage, digital services, social media engagement, and online transactions continue to expand across the country. By establishing measurable benchmarks, the index is expected to support evidence-based policymaking and strengthen national efforts to promote digital resilience.

Officials stated that the National Digital Safety Index will help evaluate factors related to cybersecurity awareness, digital literacy, online behavior, privacy protection, and the safe use of digital platforms. The insights generated through the framework will assist in identifying gaps, tracking progress, and guiding future awareness campaigns and policy interventions.

The launch aligns with Qatar’s broader digital transformation agenda, which places strong emphasis on secure digital infrastructure, technology adoption, and citizen empowerment. As digital technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, governments are paying greater attention to issues such as online safety, cyber hygiene, misinformation, digital wellbeing, and the protection of vulnerable users.

Globally, digital safety has become an increasingly important policy area as societies navigate the challenges associated with expanding digital ecosystems. Governments, technology companies, educational institutions, and civil society organizations are working together to develop frameworks that balance innovation with user protection.

The initiative also supports efforts to strengthen digital literacy and encourage responsible participation in the digital economy. As digital platforms continue to influence education, commerce, communication, and public services, building awareness around safe online practices is becoming a critical component of national digital strategies.

Qatar’s National Digital Safety Index is expected to serve as a valuable tool for monitoring digital wellbeing trends while supporting the country’s ambition to foster a secure, inclusive, and resilient digital society.
